Staff Survey

You said, we heard

When the Vice-Chancellor delivered his annual address in October last year, he said that Cambridge was an excellent university because of its people – and that in the years ahead it must take further steps to value its staff. This survey was an opportunity for you to share your views about working here, and for us to take action on what you said.

Put simply, we wanted to know how we can better support you as an employee.

Engagement

Our survey provider ORC International describes employee engagement as being "about more than just satisfaction. It is a mutually beneficial relationship betwen the employee and the organisation. Engagement is a good indicator of how connected they are to the organisation and in helping to achieve its goals."

The University's engagement score from the survey was 72%, and it received positive engagement scores in the following topics:

  • Understanding how my work contributes to the success of my area of the University
  • Being clear about what I am expected to achieve in my job
  • Believing that the work the University does is world class.

Areas where improvement is required across the University were:

  • Sufficient and fair opportunities for career progression, including the Senior Academic Promotions process
  • Working effectively between different parts of the University.

Taking action

Since the close of the survey in April 2019 the University has spent the last few months action planning. You can find out more about this involves in the Taking Action section of this website.

We are an excellent university because we have excellent people. And in the years ahead, we must take further steps to value our staff.

Professor Stephen Toope, Vice-Chancellor, October 2018
